Homage to Ansel Adams Exhibit

 About the Exhibit:

The Homage to Ansel Adams Exhibit showcases a collection of fine art black and white photographs by Greg Matchick, a St. Louis based and resident artist at Gateway Gallery. This exhibit is being held in conjunction with the upcoming Gateway Gallery exhibit "Homage to the Old Masters". In this exhibit, the gallery artists are interpreting a select group of works by the old masters from the collection held at the St. Louis Art Museum; each artist sharing their own vision. Among those works selected for interpretation was the Ansel Adams photograph "Clearing Winter Storm", an image of dramatic light in the Yosemite Valley.

For my interpretation I selected from among my photographs of Yosemite. However, you may be surprised at my selection Broken Fence in Morning Light. It is not a sweeping landscape of Yosemite, yet it highlights the essence of his image. The subject of his photograph is the drama of light in Yosemite, not the view of the valley. That is what makes it stand out from a mundane view of Yosemite. Thus my image highlights the drama of light in Yosemite, but with subject being of a more intimate setting (subjects Ansel Adams photographed as well). Yet, I have taken this exhibit a step further. As a photographer influenced by the works of Ansel Adams I considered it only proper to pay homage with an entire exhibit.

These photographs explore texture and tones through composition and light. Rather than choosing grand landscape images I have chosen photographs of a more intimate nature. A sampling of the images includes Broken Fence in Morning Light where dramatic morning light streaks through the trees and upon a broken split rail fence and White Woods III where late afternoon side-lighting illuminates a small stand of white trees in the Dordogne River Valley of France. In another image from Europe, Slovenian Woods, a lone fallen white tree seems to glow on a distant hillside. Closer to home, dappled sunlight strikes an old stone wall and wildflowers in Stone Wall and Wildflowers. In the image Bare Trees Along Highway 21, carefully composed bare trees frame a tender young tree receding into the dark wooded hillside and Dogwood in Carondelet Park captures the beauty of the Missouri state tree in a city park. Also included in the exhibit are photographs from the Smokey Mountains. Dappled light streaks through the trees to highlight Laurel Falls in a composition that makes you feel as though the stream is at your feet. An old decaying stump in Cades Cove is the subject of Stump in a Field and Stump in a Field II..
